Six months on

In March of this year, we embarked on an adventure — we moved from California, the only place my husband and my boys have ever lived in, and started a road trip that would take us to our new home in Wisconsin.

That morning, we said goodbye to friends and family, and to the home we’d lived in for 10 years.

We drove mostly along route 66, seeing places like Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon, discovering new foods like fry bread (which Alexander loved!), and driving through long stretches of road that seemed to go on forever. We saw bits and pieces of Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois, before arriving in our new home state of Wisconsin.

We lucked out in that we arrived just as the snow was almost gone. On the boys’ first day of school, there were barely any traces of it, and so we escaped the worst of winter. Speaking of school, we couldn’t be happier. The difference in school budgets is clear (even though Governor Walker has done his best to cut funding, he hasn’t wrecked the budgets to California level) – and the resources that my boys can enjoy are amazing.

Our home – what can I say about our beautiful new home?

We have plans for the landscaping, and the exterior paint, although the latter might not happen for a couple of years due to budget constraints. But as far as I’m concerned, it’s beautiful, and a house we could never have lived in back in California. It’s three times the size (without including the basement) and it still cost significantly less than our house in San Jose.

I keep being told to “just wait” until I go through my first winter here. People are probably right and it will be much more difficult than I imagine, but I am sure as heck enjoying the fall weather right now. Today’s high temp will be 64. That’s my kind of weather. True, the humidity is kind of icky, but not having entire weeks of 100-degree weather is a relief to me.

On a personal level, I am making some good friendships here, meeting wonderful people. Our neighbors are delightful and one is about to have a baby girl. I get to shop in the pink aisle! 😀 I am also currently in a lot of pain because of an aerial yoga class I took two days ago. Oh, so worth it. I loved it. There is so much to do here, lots of it family-friendly, including scenic drives (picture courtesy Travel Wisconsin):

Six months have gone by so quickly, we arrived with the promise of spring and now the leaves are changing color. Thank you, Wisconsin, for welcoming us with so much kindness and beauty.

We are moving to . . .

No, not France. I wish. But no. Although it will be an equally dairy-friendly land.

Uh-oh. This Niners fan is going to be a little out of place, although right now I am very angry with the Forty-Niners front office for letting Coach Harbaugh go. But, Coach will now be just across the lake, and I will be cheering for the Michigan Wolverines.

You know what this means . . .

Hello Wisconsin!!!

That’s right. The big adventure of 2015 for our family will be our move from California to Wisconsin, or as I call it, from Sunny California to North of the Wall (GoT reference).

My husband is starting a new job after a horrific year and a half in a situation where our family was impacted financially, emotionally, my husband’s health was suffering, etc. We are looking forward to living in the midwest, to new experiences, to making new friends, to having white Christmases. Yes, it will be difficult to leave friends and family behind, to leave the house our boys came home to after being born, to leave the only lifestyle we’ve known, to live in the snow, but we’re determined to make a good life for ourselves, and of course, I will be sharing our transformation from Californians to Wisconsinites here.

Have a wonderful Monday!

Star Wars at the Tech!

We are super happy that the Tech Museum exhibition on Star Wars was extended because we have been so busy that we would have missed it otherwise.

There were lots of props and costumes used in the actual films:

My three men:

Something that caught my little ones’ attention was the interactive sound/visual stations. You moved your fingers across a small screen and your movements became bright patterns of color and sound.

It caught my attention as well, because I have something called synaesthesia. I’ve always perceived that letters have specific colors, that pain has not only color but taste as well, and that something too bright can leave me feeling like I’m deaf. In plain English, it’s a condition where all your senses run together and, for example, instead of perceiving something visual just with your sense of sight, you perceive it with one or more of your other senses as well.

The highlight of our museum trip for our oldest was the robot-building area:

Lastly, the boys had fun figuring out where we live 😀

It was a super fun trip, and it’s only on for sic more days, so if you’re a local and have wanted to see this, this is your chance!

Chester road trip

Recently, my mom had eye surgery and I decided to visit her. She lives in Chester, about 5 hours from me, not too bad of a drive. I told her I’d get there on Friday and leave Sunday morning. What I did not tell her was that I was bringing the boys with me ;D My sister and her husband live in the same apartment building, and they were all super surprised to see the three of us arrive.

Chester is a very small town that supports the local tourism (to Lassen volcano) and although I did bring some technology for the boys, I wanted them to also enjoy the outdoors and hang out with the family.

Of course, the highlight of the trip was that my sister baked a cake. They were not able to make it to Aidan’s birthday, and will probably not make it to Alexander’s birthday in July, so they chose to celebrate both boys while we were all together – isn’t that sweet?

My boys are vanilla/vanilla fanatics – vanilla cake with vanilla frosting, so the cake was decorated half for them and half for the ones of us who like chocolate frosting:

Then it was Happy Birthday singing time!

The size of the slices was the subject of a lot of negotiation.

My youngest also had a lot of fun drawing and coloring, something he’s really into right now, bringing stories to life. It was a lovely, albeit brief visit, and we were blessed with outstanding weather both in Chester and back home.

We do have another, longer, road trip planned in a few months, but we have a lot of good memories to last us until the next time we visit Chester!

Lazytown

No, not the show. More like, our lives.

My husband, bless his heart, has been working long, hard hours at his new job. The boys and I have been sick, on-and-off, for the past 3 weeks. We’ve decided to spend Saturday as a family, not going anywhere, not “accomplishing” anything other than good times spent together, which to me is the greatest accomplishment we can have.

Plans are flexible but include:

– Finishing the chocolate chip cookies I made last night. I blame my best friend for this new addiction!
– Dumping ALL the Legos on a blanket in the middle of the living room and building whatever we want.
– Making pretzels and experimenting with toppings and dipping sauces.
– Starting a new crochet project (thanks, Lisa!!!)
– Catching up on Supernatural (I’m about midway through season 2)

Or we may do none of this and just lay on the couch and pet Foxy all day long. She’d like that.

Third annual New Year’s Day Brunch

What better way to start the new year than with a bunch of friends and lots of excellent food? After the success of our second annual NYD brunch, we knew our little tradition had serious traction and prepped for good times and good food to start 2014.

The talented Desiree from The 36th Avenue designed adorable printables which came in handy for our celebration – I added a bit to the large printable, but other than that, the design is all hers.

Steve, his mom and his aunt do some cooking:

Steve also made monkey bread, and our guests brought yummy scones with homemade jam, homemade breakfast sausage, fresh fruit, OJ, sweet potato hash, brownies, etc. while we provided coffee, pancakes and waffles, and eggs and bacon.

As excellent as the food was, it was even better to have family, and friends from all areas of our lives, getting together. Truly a great way to start 2014 – cheers!!!

Thanksgiving 2013

Our Thanksgiving celebration was pretty damn awesome, I have to say. We hosted as we have for the past few years, but this time it was super special because we got to meet the littlest member of the family – and the current titleholder of The Most Chunkalicious Thighs in Existence. Here she is with our oldest, who is so good with babies:

Our menu had most of the usual dishes, plus a butternut squash soup Steve had tried in Napa and wanted to recreate. It was my favorite part of the meal.

Other than cooing at the baby.

I forgot to include poached pears in the menu, it was something Steve tried a couple of years ago and it was a hit, so he makes it every year.

Seriously, our little cousin could feed a family of four for a week with one of her thighs.

We are not having any more kids so kindly allow me this temporary baby-insanity. Happiest baby ever. Mama J, you are doing a great job!

I hope your Thanksgiving – or your Thursday if you did not celebrate – was a good one. I do not partake of the brick-and-mortar Black Friday craze, but I will definitely be checking out online sales – are you braving the crowds to get a deal?

Heritage

We brought more than great memories from our trip to the Pacific Northwest:

Steve’s uncle and aunt graciously gave us this steamer trunk, belonging to Steve’s great-great-uncle Carl Swanson.

Isn’t it gorgeous?

The boys were oohing and aahhing over it, and the trunk that previously lived in our master bedroom is now in our living room, housing various blankets.

We are so happy and honored to have this beautiful piece of family history in our home.

Introducing . . .

The newest member of our family:

It’s Foxy!
(Miss Foxy if you’re nasty. nasty!)
just kidding.

Foxy is a 6-year-old beagle we adopted on Sunday. She is darling, charming us and our boys with her sweetness and loving nature.

She has made herself quite at home already!

Here she watches Alex picking strawberries in the backyard:

The cats have not been as happy about her arrival. Bernie has engaged in a couple of staring contests and Willie-Boo ran for the back of the couch. Foxy just ignores them.

We had been thinking about getting a dog for a while, and always knew it would be a rescue, so this weekend was spent going from shelter to shelter, past hundreds of chihuahuas and dozens of pit bulls, looking for one who would be ok with kids and cats, not set off my allergies, and be grown up. Foxy met the requirements and the boys fell in love with her, so she’s part of our home now.

I am sure many adventures with Foxy are in our future!
