My daddy

My darling dad passed away on July 3, 2010. Officially, he died on July 6, but that is just the date when the machines were unplugged. He was gone on the 3rd, after his third – and fatal – heart attack. They were able to fix his heart and get it going again, but his brain was without oxygen for too long and that, my father was unable to overcome.

Dad and I had our rough times, but after my firstborn arrived we agreed that we wouldn’t ever let others’ bullshit get in the way of our relationship, and that we’d talk everything out. He was a doting and proud grandfather and loved my boys dearly. He was always looking out for something new to get them, or making sure he had foods he liked at home for when we visited.

This is the last photo I have of me and my dad, taken a few months before he died. Today would have been his 77th birthday. We would probably have taken him out for dinner or brought dinner over to his place.

I miss you so much, dad, every day I think of you and the times we shared. I’m sure someday we’ll see each other again. Until then, I hope you are proud of me and my boys.

Girl Crush: Blake Lively

I just love Blake Lively. No offense to Nikki Reed, but if *I* had been in charge of casting Rosalie in the Twilight movies, I would have chosen Blake to play her. Please, the most beautiful creature on the planet? Easy choice. Nikki is a sexy, gorgeous brunette, but Catherine Hardwicke fucked up the casting big time and now in the movies, Rosalie looks like a bitch with a bad dye job.

ANYWAY, onto my girl Blake – she was just named the face of Chanel Mademoiselle handbags. Here she is with the Kaiser himself, Karl Lagerfeld:
Her smile is so sparkling and sweet, she might be a bitch from hell for all I know but come on, anyone who makes cupcakes can’t be all that bad.

And no, I don’t want Gossip Girl. I don’t have time. But I do love Blake. Or as I call her, my Rosalie.

Okay, that was creepy even for me.

Bathroom tales

In 2009 I decided to paint out main bathroom (as opposed to the master bathroom) – the walls were white, the toilet (obviously) and tub were white, the cabinet was an ugly dark brown and the hideous banjo-shaped counter was a groovy faux marble white/cream monstrosity.

Much to my husband’s chagrin, I chose a very colorful butternut squash-y rich yellow-orange called Chamois, by Ralph Lauren.
I love it. It is warm and cozy and wonderful for those mornings when you wake up feeling like hell and you need something more than a nasty white wall behind you as you look in the mirror.

I also changed the curtain to something more neutral than baby elephants and bought a curtain rod in an oil-rubbed bronze finish to continue the rich, warm tones idea.

In 2011, a more extensive update to the bathroom is going to be a necessity. The flooring was not well done and there is damage that needs to be repaired. Also, my children’s baths have caused further damage, I am sure, and although we were hoping to wait until they were over their lengthy baths, I don’t think that’s happening any time soon.

So, flooring needs to be done, and also we can finally be rid of the nasty banjo counter and dark cabinet. The cabinet itself is in good shape, so I am thinking a good sanding and painting would do it a world of good. Thing is, I can’t make up my mind. Should I go for it and paint it white in order to lighten up the room? Or go the opposite way and go for a rich dark brown, not the nasty orange-y brown it is now. The medicine cabinet would be painted to match and the toilet lid would be changed.

We do have a bit of time before I figure it out. Right now we have a (ha ha) nature theme in our bathroom, with a framed Cavallini print on one wall, so I thought the aviary shower curtain would be a cute addition. If not, something very neutral, as I like to change the decor regularly.

The bathroom area, aside from the tub, is 5×5, so it’s quite small. In a way, that’s a good thing because we have a smaller space to purchase flooring for. This is a very rough draft of what I’m thinking for our bathroom:

What do you think? Ideas? Suggestions?

Getting the blues

My mom gave me a gorgeous peacoat for Christmas. I love it, it fits wonderfully, and it’s blue. Huh?

Other than jeans, I rarely do blue, and I never do gray, which I associate with blue. I guess because I love black and burgundy too much, and recently started my tan/neutral/chocolate obsession, so that’s what I have been focusing on, but I’ve started to think of lovely outfits to top off with my new blue coat.

Now I can’t wait. In fact, I’m probably going to throw the thing on tonight, even if I have nowhere to go.

Favorite Outfits

I’m starting a series here of some of my favorite outfits – both to share my finds with you guys and also to remind myself of options I have on those mornings when I think I have nothing to wear.

This first one is pretty basic; I am a busy mom with two young boys and the time before the school run is limited. I try my best to not look like I just dragged my sorry carcass out of bed, so if there’s time I do add a cute hat, or a pin, or at least some pretty lip gloss.

As I mentioned in my favorites page, I puffy heart LOVE these jeans. I have the dark wash, because I never find the medium wash in the store, but I might have to just order it because these really are fab jeans. The hoodie is comfy and cozy for cold mornings, but unlike my other hoodies, this one is a little more form fitting. A small detail, but makes me look a bit more pulled together. The boots give me a little more height and style. ’nuff said 😀

2011 master bedroom plans

Here are my ideas for our bedroom improvement plans for the year. The walls are currently painted in a pale gold color, with a sponge finish. The wall surrounding the sliding door closet is burgundy, and that’s going to go away. I wish the sliding doors were going as well, but they do have mirrors and mirrors are a good thing.

I would LOVE a headboard/frame for my bed. We have a few wrought iron details around the room so that would be my favorite finish. The wall that separates the sink area from the bed area is big and bare, so a few framed prints or a big framed print would work there.

Details are below the board – I love the warm and cozy neutral palette, which can be freshened up with accessories in strong colors to suit the season:

11 things about me

I figure that with it being 2011 and all, I can tell you 11 things about me you might not (yet) know, and maybe you’ll be inclined to share some tidbits too!

1 – I am a complete peasant. What I mean is I like what I like, regardless of how grand it is. Sure I enjoy a $300 bottle of wine (usually thanks to our friends who have their own cellar) but I can enjoy a $4 just as much. Same with chocolate. I love Belgian and Swiss goodies, but my favorite type is plain Hershey’s.

2 – I am a snob, which you’d think contradicts #1, but let me explain. If I stay in a $300 hotel room, it better be a damn good hotel room (it not always is.) If I go to Masa’s to have a tasting menu for nearly $400, by the first ever American winner of the original Iron Chef, it better be one of the best fucking meals of my life (it was.) I am not easily impressed. If I choose to spend $$$, it better be fucking worth it.

3 – I used to be a romance novel reviewer. I got into a major romance novel kick and decided I needed to share my opinions with the world, so I did. Eventually I went off the genre and now am a voracious reader of a variety of fiction and non-fiction.

4 – I swear a lot. Mostly online, because I have two boys, ages 4 1/2 and almost 6, so I really need to watch it. The occasional swear word pops out, usually while driving, “mommy, what does ‘useless motherfucker from hell’ mean?”, but I try to be good.

5 – I used to be what I call Latin Goth during my 20s and early 30s. My wardrobe was half burgundy, half black, with some gold thrown in. My bridesmaids wore burgundy dresses and carried ivory flowers, while I wore ivory and gold and carried dark burgundy flowers. I did think of wearing a burgundy gown but I fell in love with my dress and couldn’t think of wearing anything else. Now I’m 39 and still love black and burgundy, but in smaller doses.

6 – I was born and raised in Peru, we moved here when I was 13, and lived in Mountain View for 18 years. Then I moved in with my boyfriend, we got married, and moved to the South Bay. My parents stayed in Mountain View until July 2010, when my darling dad died suddenly, and now I cannot drive through the city without immense feelings of grief. I used to think someday we might move there if we can afford it, but now I could never do that. I don’t think I’d survive it.

7 – I am a gamer. Yep, I am one of those geeks who play MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games) – or rather, just one MMORPG, World of Warcraft. My husband got me addicted and I try to play a couple of times a week. I don’t play as often as he does because I actually sleep at night, but I do enjoy it, and the boys love to make my characters jump, which sucks when I’m casting a spell because jumping interrupts spellcasting, but, you know, they have fun, too ;D

8 – I am biologically unable to have any more kids. People are always asking when we’re going to try for the girl. None of my dear online friends, of course, because we have more sense than that, but really, WTF!? Mostly because I’m almost forty and I can hear the unsaid part of the question “when are you going to try for the girl (before you’re too old)?” — After suffering from horrific periods since the age of 11, and just accepting that’s what nature had dealt me, I ended up finding out I had fibroids, and not surprisingly, severe anemia. So severe that when my GYN and I agreed on the hysterectomy, we couldn’t schedule it because my blood count was so low. Anyway, a year and a half ago I had the surgery and have been happier than ever – we had decided on 2 children from the beginning and I actually had already had my tubes tied after #2.

9 – I can write backwards. Years and years ago, I must have been 6 or 7, I remember hearing about someone who could write backwards – not Leonardo. Well, the person could have been named Leonardo, but it wasn’t THE Leonardo. At least I don’t think so. ANYWAY, I remember hearing about this and thinking “well, why couldn’t you write backwards?” and I grabbed some paper and a pencil and started doing it. I showed my parents and then left because it was boring and they were like, um, okay, kid.

10 – I used to be allergic to chocolate. Then I got pregnant with my first child. Ever since, I can eat chocolate and not break out in a rash. I also used to be able to drink milk. After I had my second son, no more milk! If I drink a glass of cow’s milk my belly swells up and things are nast-eee for the next day or so and that’s all I’m going to say about that. Both my sons were born allergic to the proteins in cow’s milk. They can have yogurt and cheese, and little bit of cow’s milk to drink, but now we drink rice milk.

11 – I used to make and sell jewelry. I was darn good at it, too, and did it for a few years. It was very nice play money. Then I went off it. I got bored and to this day I just don’t feel the urge to grab my tools and beads and make something. I learn to sew a couple of years ago and that was that. I sold most of my bead stash, gave the rest to my mom, and now she and my sis make stuff. Now I’m into fabric, my veggie garden, and mostly, finding new ways to make my home cozier and prettier.

So those are my Eleven for 20 Eleven – if you’re STILL reading, I thank you from the bottom of my motherfucking heart because that probably took some time out of your day. I promise my future posts won’t be this wordy 😀
