Adventures in Cupcake Tasting

Last week I took my boys to a cupcake shop — my oldest got a trip to Sprinkles for his birthday back in February, so this time we went to Kara’s Cupcakes in Santana Row.

The boys wanted one type of cupcake and the array of flavors could not dissuade them from their choice.

They each got the Sweet Vanilla mini cupcakes.

I chose some other flavors for me and my husband.

Sweet chocolate for me, yum yum.

Red velvet on the left for me as well, and Kara’s Karrot for my hubster.

By the way . . .

Is anyone planning to see the new Total Recall? πŸ˜€ If you got the reference, you’re awesome. And about my age.

How can this be?

In one week, my oldest will be all done with first grade. I don’t understand how this happened, not only because CLEARLY I am much too young to be the mother of a 7-year-old, but also because, um, wasn’t it just last week that he had his first day of first grade?

He picked out the outfit, as he does every day. He prefers polo shirts to t-shirts, even when he’s done with school and changes into “play clothes”.

Wasn’t it just a few days ago that he had his Halloween parade?

Surely, just a couple of days ago he and his classmates were getting Principal’s Awards

I am, however astonished I am at how quickly time goes by, so happy he has made good friends at school

Daddy helped him with his Leprechaun trap — such a rite of passage, isn’t it?

Yesterday was his last field trip of the school year – the kids went to Happy Hollow, a local park and zoo, and they had a blast!

Thanks to my dear friend M for the field trip photo!

My darling Aidan, I am so proud of you. You are such a sweet boy and always eager for more and more learning, I can only hope I can live up to your hunger for knowledge. Oh, and daddy will have to teach you math and science because I suck at both. History and language arts? That’s mama’s turf. Love you always!

She loves me . . . She loves me not!

She Loves Me

1. My sweet new nephew – it will be months before I ever get to meet him, since he lives in another continent, but I can’t wait to squish the little guy and cover his sweet face with kisses!

2. New scented candles – just received this one as a gift and it’s so yummy! There’s also a little hint as to what we’ve been working on.

3. That my boys are almost done with school – I can’t wait for summer and all the fun we are going to have together! Have you seen this great summer photo checklist from Simple as That? Full of great ideas to capture those fab summer moments!

She Loves Me NOT

1. I will admit I am dreading the summer heat. I don’t do well in heat or direct sun. A big floppy hat (like this one from Target) is always my best friend in these months.

Our trip to Disneyland: part 3

Our last day at Disneyland brought us back full circle – Dumbo was the first ride my boys ever rode. They were obsessed with elephants at the time and I think we went on this a good dozen times. Each day.

Alex chose to wear one of his pajama tops (made by me) for the day:

The carousel is always a favorite!

The boys tried their best to pry the Sword from the Stone:

In the end, my husband told them, “maybe next time”.

On Thursday, we started the drive back home, with a stop at the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History — more specifically, their Dinosaur Hall:

The boys loved seeing all the skeletons and interactive features — their interest in dinosaurs is not as strong as it was a couple of years ago; now Godzilla and superheroes have taken higher places of importance, but still, dinos continue to fascinate them.

We drove home after our brief visit, with a few stops for nourishment and bathroom breaks — the sky looked like this for most of our drive back:

But it wasn’t too bad, even when it did rain. We got home late, tired, happy, the boys eager to play with new toys, us adults eager to fall into bed, but all of us very, very grateful to Gran and Grandpa for taking us to Disneyland. Again. My little man did so well this time around, he was very clear when it was all getting too overwhelming for him and he and I would go back to the hotel room so he could spend some time in more calm surroundings. My big boy is such a good big brother, always looking out for Alex and such a delight to hang out with. There were a few moments of crankiness, but hello, some of them were mine, too.

Good-bye for now, Disneyland — I am sure we will see you again!

Our trip to Disneyland, part 2

Our trip to Disneyland continues with some collages I made of the boys:

My boys LOVE Tarzan’s Treehouse – I went up that thing once and decided that was the last of it for me. My back started to kill me and it took two rides of the Indiana Jones Adventure to fix it. That thing is better than a chiropractor, I swear. I went on it once when my back was pretty locked up, and when it was done I swear half the pain was gone, so of course I went on it again. It worked like a charm. Worth the price of admission right there ;D

Ssshhh – don’t tell them it used to be the Swiss Family Robinson tree house.

If you liked Cars, you will love the new Cars Land opening in June, they’ve recreated Radiator Springs and have several attractions and shops almost ready to go – a friend of my husband’s is an Imagineer working on this project and s/he showed us the preview room (open to everyone) which includes some of his/her work. Don’t want to get anyone in trouble so that’s all I’m going to say about that.

Alex decided he was getting overwhelmed by it all so he and I went back to the hotel room after lunch and we just hung out, played on my laptop, and I caught up on a new cookbook I got.

More about our trip in the next post!

Our trip to Disneyland!

We were gone last week, and for a very good reason – Gran and Grandpa decided to take us all on a vacation to Disneyland!

My oldest made it clear upon arriving at the hotel room that he meant to have a ferociously good time!

He was also very happy to see the many Avengers posters around D’land and Downtown Disney πŸ˜€

Waiting in line for the Jungle Cruise – the boys’ all-time favorite!

My youngest loved looking out the hotel room window — we were on the third floor and he thought it was awesome being able to look down at all the cars and people πŸ˜€

My little guy wasn’t tall enough for Star Tours so Grandpa kept him entertained.

(yes, we are totally getting lots of ideas for a future birthday party or room makeover!)

More on our trip to D’Land in my next post!

Things my kid has said

Yeah, this is going to be a “isn’t my kid funny?” posts, so if that sort of thing makes you want to gag, feel free to hit the Backspace button πŸ˜€

My oldest has inherited his daddy’s gift of gab (and of arguing his way out of situations!) Β so since he started talking, he’s come up with some funny ways of expressing his thoughts with his limited language.

The first one I remember was “nose sauce” — back when he was 2, I think.

He was very aware of his body and things that happened and wanted to name everything. Since he didn’t know the term “runny nose” he came up with his own.

Another one was “sky car” — vehicles have always been important πŸ˜€

The funny thing is, he said “vroom vroom” for car, but an airplane was “sky car”. Our backyard is right under a landing path for the local airport, so in the evenings we used to go out back and just watch the planes go by. They still do, of course, but it’s not as important now, LOL.

One of the latest terms, and the reason I started thinking back to other stuff he’d come up with, is “armpit grease” — seriously, the kid runs around like a maniac most of the day, so of course, he gets sweaty. I am SO not looking forward to the teenage years with my boys, mostly because every friend I’ve watched Bridesmaids with points at me when this scene comes up. My only comment is, it’s “graduated FROM high school”, thank you.

Not looking forward to the blanket-cracking years.

From pirate room to superhero lair

After our oldest’s awesome superhero party, we left the backdrop up on the living room wall for a few days. Β Then it became a couple of weeks. Β And by the time it was a month after the party, frankly, it needed to be taken down but we didn’t want to just trash it.

My boy on his birthday with the awesome backdrop made by my husband and his momma.

Our friend Jen – we have about 5 of them but this is my newest Jen-friend LOL – suggested we put it in our son’s bedroom. He’d been clear that he didn’t really dig the pirate theme and while we didn’t want to tear all of it down, putting up the butcher paper mural was a good compromise.

We cut down the entire thing (it was mounted on temporary molding) in one piece, rolled it as we went, then stapled it in Aidan’s bedroom.

We might put up the molding, but for now it’s topped by a banner I made out of Captain America fabric.

The blanket was made (ha! more like hemmed a square piece of fabric) from Marvel heroes and villains fleece:

And I took the scraps of Captain America fabric to border a sham for his bed.

Aidan’s menagerie of animals to sleep with:

The little guy on the left, Soft Elephant, has been a trusted friend for almost 5 years now.

Our boy added some more superhero decals to complete his lair:

We were all happy with the result, and to be able to keep – for a while, at least, because it is paper, after all – this sweet backdrop for a bit longer.

I hope you enjoyed this re-purposing of the superhero birthday backdrop — I have an awesome makeover coming up in a couple of weeks. Have a great weekend!

Bits of Spring and Easter

I’m not one for many Easter vignettes — for one, I bought some lovely decorative eggs and set them up nicely. Two minutes later my boys had gotten a frying pan down and were “frying” the glittery eggs. Mm-hmm. But then I found a vase that is actually an “egg vase” from PB and put the glittery goodness inside.

This poor critter has been taken out and put back in a few times already as my children grab Easter candy corn:

And this way, ladies and gentlemen, we have the world-famous Monogram Corner — and we’re walking, and we’re walking, and we’re stopping. (Bonus points if you get the reference. Because I love that movie.)

Thank goodness the boys waited until the candle flame was out before they dove for the Hershey’s Kisses. Sheesh.

The little bottles are from Starbucks drinks, with colorful paper and self-adhesive edging I found at Michael’s.

Those are my little Spring/Easter accents around the house – because anything more complicated is just going to end up victimized by flying Angry Birds. My husband built a life-sized slingshot for the boys to hurl their stuffed toys. The boys cheered, my husband fist-bumped them, and I ran to take all the crystal stuff off the mantel. Happy weekend everyone!
